Self-Help
Sometimes you do get a free lunch in life. Below are some steps you can take to solve some basic ipod problems on your own.
My iPod is frozen, what do I do?
Most of the time resetting the ipod will solve the problem. Resetting it will not erase any of your music. This information is also available from Apple Support.
To reset an ipod with a wheel, hold down the Menu button and the Center button (select) for about 10 seconds.
To reset the iPhone or iPod Touch, hold down the Sleep/Wake button and the Home button for about 10 seconds.
If after trying this several times your ipod still does not work, it may be time to send your ipod to ifixit Hawaii.
My iPod got wet (fresh water only)
1. As tempting as it is, you MUST not turn the ipod on or continue using it. If it was on when it got wet, immediately turn it off. Although an ipod may still appear to work fine after getting wet, continuing to use it without properly drying it can easily damage it.
2. Dry off the ipod as best as possible. If you have access to compressed air, blow out all cracks and crevices.
3. Fill a bowl half full with rice then place the iPod in the bowl and cover it up with rice. Rice absorbs water and can reduce the time it takes to dry.
4. Place the bowl somewhere warm and allow it to sit for at least 48 hours. The longer you are able to let it sit the better. The goal is to allow the water to completely evaporate.
My iPod fell in the ocean!
Salt water is easily 100x more conductive than fresh water. This means that the likelihood of the iPod shorting out is much greater. If your iPod falls in the ocean, the steps for fresh water will not work. Even if the iPod is dried out, salt deposits will be left inside the iPod which will corrode it over time. These salt deposits also absorb water from the air and remain damp.
Your best bet is to turn the ipod off and immediately send it in to ifixit Hawaii. Label the package with "Salt water" and it will be given a high priority. Once received, the iPod will be opened up and cleaned out. Since salt water is do damaging, I can't make any guarantees, but I can tell you that if salt is left in the ipod, it WILL stop working once parts start to corrode.
To this date I have never been able to repair an ipod that was submerged in salt water and not quickly cleaned out.
